Blue Exorcist centralizes around a set of teenage twins, Rin and Yukio Okumura. Rin possesses abnormal strength and endurance. They were raised by Father Shiro Fujimoto, an exorcist. Early in the anime Rin learns that he and his brother are the sons of Satan, the strongest demon.

When Rin witnesses Shiro die to protect him he draws the daemon-slaying blade from it’s scabbard even though Shiro had asked him never to draw the sword. The blade had been restraining his demonic powers. By drawing the sword Rin gains permanent demonic features such as pointy ears and teeth as well as a tail. When ever he draws the sword he is able to ignite himself in blue flames that can destroy almost anything they touch.

Rin then meets Mephisto Pheles, who agrees with Rin’s wish to become an Exorcist like his guardian to become stronger and to defeat Satan. He helps Rin to enroll at the prestigious True Cross Academy. The academy is actually the Japanese branch of an international organization dedicated to protect the human realm.

Rin joins the secret Exorcist Class that is only known to a select few. Much to his surprise his brother, Yukio, is one of his teachers. This causes a lot of conflict between the brothers. Thus Rin’s journey to become an Exorcist begins, accompanied by his brother and his fellow students. However his fellow student’s despise demons and so Rin struggles to keep his true identity hidden from them.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this anime. It had moments that touched your feelings but it wasn’t all doom and gloom. There were a few plot twists, some expected and some that surprised me. I really  liked the way that Rin wasn’t popular and had to earn the respect and trust of those around him. This is one of those anime’s that I will watch again and look for season 2. It ended with multiple options for the story to continue on.

  1. This was one of those anime that I enjoyed watching but I struggle to remember once it is over. While it is entertaining if just doesn’t separate itself from the sheer number of similar anime out there. That said, a continuation of the story would be welcome.
