The Straw Hat Crew

The crew originally started in East Blue. The members were gathered from various areas. However the main protagonist and hero is their captain, Monkey D. Luffy. The Straw Hat crew get their name from Luffy’s signature straw hat. That hat had originally been given to Luffy by a fellow pirate Red-Haired Shanks. The crew are first called the Straw Hats by Smoker, a marine in Alabasta. The crew sailed the seas on their ship called the Going Merry. However after Enies Lobby the crew are forced to make a difficult decision to get a new ship, which is then called the Thousand Sunny. Currently the Straw Hat crew consists of nine members but in an early chapter of the manga, Luffy says that his ideal crew is ten members so a new member might join.  All the members of the crew have bounties, the highest being their captain.

The crew consists of a shape shifting doctor, who is a reindeer, a perverted skeleton musician, a hunted historian, a passionate cook, a money loving navigator, a relentless swordsman, a cyborg shipwright, a compulsive liar and a clueless but determined captain.

Among the crew there are four Devil Fruit users. They are Luffy, Chopper, Robin and Brook. Luffy can stretch himself and change his body shape, like rubber. Chopper is the reindeer doctor who can also change his form. Robin can create as many hands and feet as she wants from any surface. She can also control them at will. Brook’s ability allowed him to come back to life.

The nine members are:

  • Monkey D. Luffy
  • Roronoa Zoro
  • Nami
  • Ussop
  • Sanji
  • Tony Tony Chopper
  • Nico Robin
  • Franky
  • Brook

The strength of the crew greatly increases after the two year gap that they spent apart. Despite their small number, the crew is incredibly powerful. Luffy has continuously taken on and defeated people who are known for their strength. The crew have done things that had been thought impossible and completely insane. Since everything that happened at Enies Lobby the government labeled the Straw Hat crew as a very dangerous crew.

Straw_Hats_Crew_Jolly_Rogers.pngThe entire crew, each has at least one talent that they are almost perfect at. Each member is a formidable and fearsome fighter in their own way. Luffy, Zoro and Sanji have been dubbed the “Monster Trio” by the crew, due to their inhuman strength. At the start each member of the crew already had some fair fighting ability and while traveling they only became stronger and more experienced.

The two greatest attributes of the Straw Hats is their unpredictability and their charisma. Through their friendliness they manage to make friends everywhere they go, which in turn helps them to overcome almost every obstacle they are faced with. The crew also tends to act on their emotions and what they feel the right thing to do is.

However their most unique strength is that the crew is exceptionally lucky. Team work is what makes this crew really strong and noteworthy. They work well together to overcome the obstacles they are faced with, relying on each other’s strengths and acknowledging each other’s weaknesses.

While sailing the crew entertains themselves however they please. However during storms, tidal waves and any other unpredictability the sea holds for them the crew snap out of their relaxed states and pull together and do what is needed. Afterwards they slip into the relaxed state once again.

As a testament to their strength they are the only known crew where every member has a bounty on their head.
